Dos Mares, is voluntary initiative operating since January 2013, to promote marine research in the Marine Protected Areas of Central America, with the collaboration of the local and international scientific community and interested organizations.
Marine protected areas have the potential to impact positively on the economic development of the Central American region if they are properly preserved. However, a better understanding of the ecological relationships, their habitats and their biodiversity is necessary. There is no sustainable development without scientific knowledge.
Dos Mares operates under the principles of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) agreements and declarations frame, and honor the Declaration on Science And The Use Of Scientific Knowledge adopted by the UNESCO - World Conference on Science, July 1, 1999 in Budapest, Hungary.
