YAS operates a full blown weekly food distribution program, feeding more than 70,000 people this past year and distributing an estimated 24,000lbs of food every month to a little over 5,000 people (1,400 children and their families).
Today, with a mission to nourish hungry people in Orange County by filling their basic food needs with dignity, hospitality and compassion, YAS also operates a Thanksgiving dinner outreach program in addition to our fresh rescue (the collection of fresh food from local grocers and restaurants) and food bank. This outreach offers hearty, traditional fare to hungry families every November. Furthermore, we provide clothing and gas cards when needed, and have responded to requests for lodging when children were involved.
We have enjoyed significant growth over the past seven years. In 2009, we distributed approximately 173,800 pounds of food to 59,075 low-income families and homeless people in our community. In 2010, YAS purchased (at a significant discount) and received donations of 290,942 pounds of food, which were distributed to 71,137 people, an increase of 21% over the previous year.
